Welcome!

Understanding how vocational education and training systems shape skills, economic outcomes, and labor markets is essential in a rapidly changing world. The Swiss Leading House VPET-ECON (Vocational and Professional Education and Training – Economics) advances this understanding through research on the economics of education, firm behavior, and training policies. It combines high-quality research with the systematic development of early-career researchers through structured training, mentoring, and participation in collaborative projects. Through continuous exchange with policy, industry, and academia, it promotes the transfer of research findings into practice and supports evidence-based decision-making to strengthen Switzerland’s vocational and professional education and training (VPET) system.

The Leading House VPET-ECON supports decision-makers in firms, policy, and professional organizations (OdAs) with practice-oriented content and activities.

The “Swiss Leading House VPET-ECON: A Research Center on the Economics of Education, Firm Behavior and Training Policies” is a research center under the direction of Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Uschi Backes-Gellner (University of Zurich) andProf. Dr. Stefan C. Wolter (University of Bern), funded by the Swiss State Secretariat for Education, Research and Innovation (SERI). Through the “Leading House VPET-ECON”, the SERI supports the long-term development of Swiss research on Vocational and Professional Education and Training (VPET).
