Project Transitions

The role of non-cognitive skills for the transition into post-compulsory education

(Die Rolle nicht-kognitiver Fähigkeiten für den Übergang in die nachobligatorische Ausbildung)

In this project we study the importance of non-cognitive skills for the transition into post-compulsory education. We use a sample of almost 1’500 pupils in the Canton of Berne, that we have surveyed twice. The first survey took place at the beginning of their 8th grade and the second survey at the end of compulsory schooling (9th grade), when the decisions for post-compulsory education were already made. In a first study we find that Locus of Control (LoC) impacts the search process, insofar that pupils with an external LoC had more often decided already two years before leaving compulsory school not to enter directly in a certifying post-compulsory education and have therefore delayed this decision (Jaik & Wolter 2016). In coming analyses we will analyze the role of non-cognitive skills on the changes between initial plans and realized plans.
