Project Payment type and training decision

Human capital investment in unregulated labor markets: How does a firm’s compensation strategy influence the decision to train?

(Humankapitalinvestionen in unvollkommenen Arbeitsmärkten: Welche Rolle spielt die Lohnform bei der Ausbildungsentscheidung?)

A primary finding of the new training literature is that firms may be able to recoup the costs of their training investment by paying apprenticeship graduates a wage below the marginal productivity due to compressed wages (Acemoglu and Pischke 1998, 1999). However, compressed wages may not be applicable everywhere. Therefore, the question arises which other mechanisms exist to ensure that graduates stay with their training firm upon completion of their training. In this project we investigate whether different payment types have an effect on a firm’s ability to retain apprenticeship graduates.
