Effects of universities of applied sciences on regional innovation

(Fachhochschulen und regionale Innovation)

Previous literature extensively investigates the role of higher education in fostering regional innovation activities. These studies show that tertiary academic universities are a fundamental determinant of innovation. However, whether tertiary vocational education also fosters innovation is not clear so far. In this project, we therefore focus on Universities of Applied Sciences (UAS), i.e. tertiary vocational education institutions that conduct applied research and that focus on vocational practice, and investigate their effect on innovation. Exploiting the regional and temporal variation in the establishment of UAS campuses, we estimate the effect of UAS on innovation quantity and quality of municipalities.
