Project 5

Utilization of initial and further training in the course of working life

This project focuses on the learning worker and is geared to the specific content of vocational training. Here, research will investigate the range of employees’ reported knowledge and competences related to different educational achievements and which of them are currently required on the job, or alternatively where deficiencies exist with regard to job requirements. This is therefore an analysis on a micro-micro level, since not the level of formally acquired qualifications is to be analyzed, but concrete competences and knowledge.

Against this background, questions can be answered such as how persons in jobs appropriate to the training differ from those who have changed their vocational field or crossed industry lines. This question is of extreme relevance particularly with regard to the increasing tertiarization of employment, which, at least until now, has not been accompanied by a concomitant expansion of the number of apprentices in the tertiary sector. In particular, research should cover the extent to which participation in further training activities can take on a compensatory function and whether there are systematic differences between how different types of companies or sectors are able to process knowledge gaps.
