The joint conference of the Jacobs Foundation and the Swiss Leading House on the Economics of Education at the Universities of Zurich and Berne will take place on September 21-23, 2014, at the Jacobs Foundation's conference center at Marbach Castle (Lake Constance), Germany. The keynote speakers of the conference will be:

  • Peter Arcidiacono (Duke University)
  • Tuomas Pekkarinen (Aalto University)
  • and invited speakers

The question how students choose their field of study is researched by scholars of different disciplines. These decisions are important, especially since dysfunctions like over-education or skill shortages like in the STEM subjects affect not only the individuals but the economy at large. Economists’ research has provided a rich set of novel results and methodologies that help to a better understanding of these choices. Economists today not only look at how monetary benefits, labor markets and institutions affect the choices, but also at non-monetary returns as well as the influence of individual preferences and personality traits. All this can or has been applied to the choice of study fields. Recent research has studied individual risk- and time preferences, competitiveness and other personal traits or gender in their impact on study choices. In addition there is a growing number of research studying the effects of organizational determinants such as school composition, gender mix, and many others.

This international conference aims to bring together innovative papers from the field of economics that research the choice of study fields in a very broad sense, i.e. on all levels of education, as well as in all types of education (e.g. general vs. vocational education). We also welcome papers on new theoretical and empirical approaches to better analyze the choice of study fields.

Abstracts and papers must be submitted electronically to stefanie.hof@skbf-csre.ch.

Submissions must include an abstract and, if possible, the complete paper in pdf format (one single file, including tables and figures). Preference in the selection of papers is given to full papers and participation is restricted to a selected number of applicants. Full participation in the conference is expected by paper presenters.

The submission deadline is March 1, 2014. Acceptance decisions will be announced by end of March, 2014. Accommodation and travel costs from Zurich will be covered by the organizers. A limited number of travel grants is available upon request. No conference fees are charged.
