A new paper by Rinawi & Backes-Gellner in the Oxford Economic Papers, studies the role of occupational skills for labour market transitions after layoffs. They find evidence for a trade-off for investments in more or less specific occupations: a higher occupational specificity on the one hand is associated with lower job mobility and a longer period of unemployment but on the other hand also with higher wages.
