Jaik Disputation

Katharina Jaik has successfully defended her dissertation titled “Upper-Secondary Education in Switzerland: Interplay Between Academic and Vocational Education and Individual Decisions”. In her thesis, she investigated individual transitions into upper-secondary education in Switzerland. On a more systemic level, she analyzed the interplay between academic and vocational education in their competition for highly able students. She shows, for example, that (1) potential imbalances on the apprenticeship market play a role for students changing their mind from occupational “dreams” (early intentions) to occupational decisions and (2) that those imbalances are also associated with the later stability of an apprenticeship (premature contract termination).
