Swiss Leading House VPET-ECON

Welcome!

The “Swiss Leading House VPET-ECON: A Research Center on the Economics of Education, Firm Behavior and Training Policies” is a joint project under the direction of Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Uschi Backes-Gellner (University of Zurich) and Prof. Dr. Stefan C. Wolter (University of Bern) funded by the Swiss State Secretariat for Education, Research and Innovation (SERI). Through the new “Leading House VPET-ECON”, the SERI expands the previous Leading House “Economics of Education, Firm Behaviour and Training Policies” and supports the long-term development of Swiss research on vocational and professional education and training (VPET) and the promotion of young researchers in the field.

Regarding research, the new “Leading House VPET-ECON” focuses on three areas. First, on how characteristics of apprenticeship training programs affect labor market outcomes and innovation; second, on the effects of economic shocks on firms’ apprenticeship offers and individual apprenticeship choices; and, third, on effects of educational policy interventions on educational and labor market choices and outcomes.

For the promotion of young researchers, the “Leading House VPET-ECON” keeps offering the well-established course program for doctoral students in the field, it introduces new assistant professorships and PostDoc positions and thus provides the foundation to build junior research groups. Moreover, the “Leading House VPET-ECON” attaches great importance to the development of networking and knowledge transfer activities.
